Seed production

Since 2003, the Dotnuva Seeds factory based in Dotnuva, a member of the Linas Agro Group, has been producing seeds of various types and varieties of agricultural crops. Dotnuva Seeds pays great attention to the selection of new varieties. It is very important that new varieties are tested under local conditions. We carry out variety comparison trials in order to select a few of the most promising new varieties from the many new varieties developed by breeders, and to further test them on farms. The trials are conducted during the growing season to observe the plants and to assess various parameters (winter hardiness, earliness, morbidity, height, resistance to lodging). At harvest, each field is harvested individually, and yield, yield quality and income per ha are assessed. By gathering information from variety comparison trials, we can assess their strengths and weaknesses and select the best varieties. Their seeds are multiplied on reliable Lithuanian farms. We work with 110 farms in Lithuania and have around 12,000 ha of seed crops every year. The quality of seeds is controlled by our specialists and the State Plant Service. The quality of seeds is checked four times before they reach the farmer.
